Learning Two Languages: Dual Language Learning Patterns, Predictors, and Outcomes

This secondary analysis study examined patterns, predictors, and outcomes of dual language learners’ (DLLs’) development in Spanish English. Research Findings: Latent profile identified three groups DLLs: Balanced Bilinguals (54%), English-Dominant (25%), Spanish-Dominant (21%). These had fairly comparable skills at Head Start (HS) entry but showed distinct learning patterns English during the 2.5 years HS kindergarten (K), which resulted group differences dual-language K. When their home classroom environments were compared, more exposure than Bilinguals. generally classroom, less home, parents with lower proficiency. fewer literacy materials opportunities for first classrooms. presented highest K achievement; other two skills. Practice or Policy: demonstrated variations among DLLs indicated need tailored strategies that address unique needs diverse presenting varying proficiency languages.
